Obituary of Joseph John Krizak

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Joseph J. Krizak of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 93, on  Sunday, April 7, 2024.

Joseph is survived by daughters Joanne, Patricia (Bob), and sons Darrell (Anita) and Kevin. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Tanya (Kenny), Derek (Jannie), Rae-Anne, Dee-Anne (Benji) and Justin. Great-grandchildren Skylar, Sierra, Kaedyn, Addyson, Bri, and Freya.  He is also survived by sisters Anne Augustine, Mary Betker and Jenny Krizak.

Joseph is predeceased by his loving wife Audrey, his sisters Jolana Dusik, Lydia Watson and Josie Cole; his parents Anthony & Josephine Krizak.

Joseph was born in Pobedim, Slovakia on May 6, 1930. At the age of seven, the family immigrated to Canada where they eventually settled in the Dufresne, MB., area where they purchased their family farm. Joseph attended a one room school and would later further his studies by taking a Diesel Mechanics course through correspondence which came in handy on the farm. Growing up he worked on the family farm, along with logging activities and hauling gravel for road construction. Joe got a job as a Transit Bus Driver for the City of Winnipeg and retired with 36 years of service. After retiring Joe was interested in a business venture so he purchased Grand Rapids Esso Gas & Service station and ran it along with his family from 1989 to1994.

Joseph met the love of his life, Audrey VanAchte, at a dance in Monominto, MB. They got married and initially lived in St. Boniface, MB., where they started their family.  They moved to the Rosewood, MB., area and started their own farm where they raised their family of four children. They enjoyed many church and community events as well as get togethers with family and friends over the years.

Joseph loved the country life, spending time in the bush, drives in the country (near and far), travel through the mountains and winters in Mexico. He liked to discuss current events with family and friends (sometimes while enjoying a rum & coke).

He had a keen interest in farming, history, and geography. Joseph enjoyed music and learned to play the accordion and would entertain us with a few tunes.

He will be remembered for his wisdom, strong yet gentle ways, work ethic, friendliness … a pleasant man with a nice smile.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff at Golden Links Lodge for their compassionate care of Joseph. A sincere note of appreciation to Joseph’s companion visitor for the caring time spent with him.

A private Interment will take place later with immediate family only.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a visit to someone you care about.
